Akeley Hall of African Mammals

  • Since its opening in 1936, the hall has been considered one of the world's great museum displays
  • The 28 dioramas in this hall depict some of the many animals and habitats of Africa
  • The animals have been reconstructed with such scientific accuracy and detail that they appear astoundingly lifelike
  • The hall is named after Carl Akeley (1864-1926), the explorer, conservationist, taxidermist, sculptor, and photographer who conceived of, designed, and collected for the hall
Guggenheim Hall of Minerals, and Morgan Memorial Hall of Gems
  • These halls contain exquisite treasures systematically arranged according to their physical properties to showcase an extraordinary range of size, color and shape
  • A highlight is the 563-carat Star of India, the largest and most famous sapphire in the world
  • Also featured is the Patricia Emerald, a 632-carat specimen that is one of the very few large, gem-quality emeralds that have been preserved uncut
Spitzer Hall of Human Origins
  • Opened in 2007, it is the first major exhibition to present, side by side, the mutually reinforcing evidence of the fossil record and cutting-edge DNA research
  • The hall covers millions of years of human history, from the emergence of our earliest ancestors through the evolution of our own species
  • The presentation is a fascinating mix of fossils, film, interactive media, life-size tableaux, ancient artifacts, and more
Milstein Hall of Ocean Life
  • Newly renovated, the hall is now a 29,000 square-foot fully immersive marine environment with high definition video projections, interactive computer stations, and eight new ocean habitat displays
  • The celebrated 94-foot blue whale, one of the Museum's star attractions, floats in a "virtual ocean" created through dramatic lighting, video and sound effects
  • The Andros Coral Reef, a two level diorama containing 40 tons of coral, allows a unique view of this ecosystem above and below the water

IMAX Film
Dinosaurs Alive!

Computer-generated images bring to life imposing creatures of the Cretaceous and titans of the Triassic that have captivated and mystified us since their fossils were first unearthed in the 19th century.  The film follows AMNH paleontologists past and present, and includes rare 1920s footage of Ray Chapman Andrews, the "real" Indiana Jones.

Climate Change: The Threat to Life and A New Energy Future: October 18, 2008 - August 16, 2009

This exhibition will examine one of the most pressing scientific issues of our time-the massive, human-induced warming of Earth, a phenomenon that could lead to drought, rising sea levels, heavy storms, and other events with potentially dire impacts on the health of society and the natural world. This exhibition will explore the science, history, and impact of climate change, and illuminate ways in which individuals, communities and nations can reduce their carbon footprints.

The Butterfly Conservatory

Through May 25, 2009

Mingle with more than 500 live, free-flying tropical butterflies in an enclosed habitat that approximates their natural environment with lush vegetation and live flowering plants.  Simulated sunlight and the sound of howler monkeys, parakeets, quetzals and other species complete the environment.

Extreme Mammals

May 23, 2009 - January 3, 2010

Extreme Mammals explores the surprising and sometimes bizarre world of extinct and living mammals.  Featuring spectacular fossils from the Museum's collections, the exhibition will examine the ancestry and evolution of numerous species, ranging from huge to tiny and speedy to sloth-like, and will showcase animals with oversized claws, fangs, snouts and horns.  The exhibition will also include dynamic media displays, animated computer interactives, hands-on activities, and touchable fossils and casts that highlights mammals' distinctive qualities and illuminate the shared ancestry that unites these diverse creatures.

Frogs: A Chorus of Colors

May 30, 2009 - January 3, 2010

Back by popular demand, this captivating exhibition introduces visitors to the colorful and richly diverse world of frogs.  More than 200 live frogs, from the tiny golden mantilla frog (less than an inch long) to the enormous African bullfrog (as big as eight inches in diameter) will be shown in their re-created habitats, complete with rock ledges, live plants and waterfalls.
